A fresh start in Year 3

Year 3 represents an exciting year for your daughter, and marks the start of her journey at Redmaids’ High. We are best known throughout Bristol for being a small, friendly independent school where every girl is known. With support in the early days from a ‘Big Girl’ in Year 5 or 6, we will ensure your daughter settles in quickly, and establishes friendships right across the school.

Teaching in Year 3 is designed to help our junior children consolidate their learning from infant years and develop increased independence and responsibility. Pupils have most lessons in their own classroom, supported by their class teacher, which quickly helps them feel at home. Coming to our independent school also means pupils have access to specialist teachers in certain subjects to help them build specific skill sets.

Our class sizes are small (maximum 20 in each class), which ensures that every girl receives focused attention where it’s needed and means that if any pupil feels challenged, this is quickly identified.

In Year 3, the curriculum covers lessons in Maths, English, Science, Humanities, French, Art & Design Technology, and Music with focused time each week in hand-writing, reading and story-telling. Computer Science is delivered through other subjects or within a specific topic.

We introduce ‘Sit Quietly You It’s Reading Time’ – weekly, dedicated reading sessions known as SQUIRT, which we think is so important and this continues throughout the Junior School.

Pastoral care is of course of paramount importance at our school and is woven throughout everything we do. There is also dedicated time on the timetable each week for PSHE (Personal, Social and Health education), which continues throughout the whole school, supports pupils’ general well-being, and is essential in helping girls better understand their mental and physical development.

A great way to end the week is Activity Hour each Friday afternoon, where girls can choose a different hobby from a range of options, to explore each term, from movie-making to den-building. Of course, there is also a huge range of extra-curricular clubs that the girls love getting involved in.

"I moved to Redmaids' High from America and I felt very nervous when I started but everyone was so kind and friendly that now I feel confident around school."
