Stepping up to Year 6

The Year 6 curriculum is broadly similar to Year 5, with the continuation of specialist teaching in most subjects. As an independent school we can adapt the areas covered in response to current affairs and subject trends.

Being the eldest in the Junior School, Year 6 set an example for the younger girls through our ‘Big girl, Little girl’ programme, and take on more roles of leadership - every single girl in our independent school is given a position of responsibility from being a house captain to an almoner, sports or dance captain; each has a different focus.

Year 6 pupils take the lead in activities like the annual upper school performance with Year 5. They have opportunities to hone their presentation skills and join debating events with QEH Juniors. There is also the chance to be part of a Sports tour, which involves one night away and a competitive match against another school.

Ultimately, in Year 6, we focus on preparing girls for our Senior School, not only academically, but learning new rules and ways of working with different teachers. We invite Year 6 to a Year 7 taster day in our Senior School and parents are supported through the move with information meetings and a dedicated Junior transition event in the Senior School. Time will be spent helping girls prepare for the Senior School Entrance Examination that they will sit in January and the vast majority will naturally progress to Year 7.

We ensure that the girls leave our Junior School with a positive mindset and are confident, well-rounded individuals, ready for their next step.
