This contemporary space sits in the heart of the school and plays an important role in our aim to help girls become more independent learners.
Miss Bratt, the School Librarian, is always on hand to help students in any way she can. She provides Recommended Reading lists for all year groups as well as topic specific lists such as LGBTQ+, International Reading and Black Lives Matter.
Each year, authors from a diverse range of backgrounds are invited to speak to students about their books, inspiration as writers and how they achieved their dream of becoming writers. In recent years Robin Stevens, Sharna Jackson and Miriam Halahmy have visited.
Fortnightly Library Lessons for students in Years 7 to 9 are used to discuss, recommend and read books. The girls are encourage to choose books to read for pleasure and discover new authors and titles in a safe environment. They are also given reading challenges to help motivate them and guide their reading.
The School Librarian works closely with the English Department to organise and run stimulating book groups. Here students can discuss books in more depth and develop the confidence to share their opinions. Every year we shadow the Bristol Teen Book Award which focuses on Diversity and the Carnegie Book Award. The Year 9 Book Club usually attend the Bristol Teen Book Award ceremony where they meet the authors and pupils from other schools.
Sixth Form students also use the library to help them with subject-specific resources, so they can read more widely around any areas they are interested. Individual support is also available for anyone completing independent research projects, such as Extended Project Qualifications (EPQ), IB Extended Essays or a school RED Talk presentation.
The Pearson Library also has an extensive collection of magazines and journals, national and local newspapers and DVDs and CDs for staff and students to enjoy.
