Food Preparation & Nutrition and Design & Technology

Technology is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject. Using creativity and imagination, students design and make products that solve real, relevant problems. They acquire a broad range of subject knowledge and draw on disciplines such as mathematics, science, ICT and art, while learning how to become resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable.

As a Department we want all students to develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world.

All students in Years 7 and 8 study Design and Technology and Food Preparation and Nutrition. They then choose one or the other to continue with study in Year 9.

In Design & Technology we help them to build and apply a repertoire of knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design and make high-quality prototypes and products for a wide range of users. They will critique, evaluate, and test their ideas and products and the work of others. In Year 9, Technology students use their product design experience to complete prototypes using a multi-material approach in Textiles.

In Food Preparation & Nutrition they will understand and apply the principles of nutrition and learn how to prepare and cook a wide range of dishes from across the globe. We ‘travel the world’ exploring different cuisines and flavours, learning about where many of our favourite dishes originate from.

In Year 9 food students delve deeper into the scientific principles of functions of ingredients, understanding the food science behind many of our favourite dishes, such as meringues and profiteroles. They will also work in groups to meet a brief and produce a range of products to professional standards.

Enrichment and extra-curricular

We organise trips to the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Design Museum in London, the Costume Museum in Bath and the BBC Good Food Show in Birmingham.

The students showcase their work through a KS3 end of year exhibition and a KS4 and 5 exhibition that takes place during the academic year.

In Food Preparation & Nutrition, pupils visit Marshfields bakery and the Bath Soft Cheese Company. These two sites allow students to experience a food manufacturing factory, understanding the food safety and hygiene procedures followed. Bath Soft Cheese teaches the students about provenance and animal welfare.
