Physical Education

As a PE Department, we encourage students to be physically active and to get involved in school sport. We also expect them to observe fair play, engage in honest competition and good sporting behaviour.

We use a range of teaching and learning styles, which include pupil-led warm ups and practices, video analysis – especially at GCSE and A Level – self-assessment, reciprocal teaching (observing others performing and giving feedback) and a ‘discovery style’ (solving problems in a variety of activities).

We have first-class facilities, both on and off-site which include a large Sports Hall, netball courts, two astro-turf pitches, tennis courts and extensive games fields. Our additional facilities and 27 acres of ground at Golden Hill give us the flexibility to deliver a broad and exciting curriculum. In addition, we recently bought the former Aviva sports ground near Cribbs Causeway and have plans in place to redevelop the whole site.

All students in Years 7 to 11 and A Level students in Years 12 and 13 have a double 'games' lesson each week. In addition, Years 7 and 8 also have a single, core 'physical education' lesson.

Our Senior girls (Years 11, 12 and 13) enjoy a Tuesday afternoon games session when they have access to David Lloyd Fitness Club. Here they can take part in a spin class, and/or use the tennis courts, swimming pools, squash courts and fitness suite. We also offer these year groups golf lessons at The Bristol Golf Club, bouldering at the Climbing Academy as well as a wide range of on-site activities including squad hockey and netball training sessions.

Students in Year 10 and 11 can opt to take GCSE PE or Dance, following the AQA exam board.

Girls in Year 12 and 13 can also opt for A Level PE or Dance and take a Level 3 Higher Sports Leaders Qualification.

Enrichment and extra-curricular

We run a comprehensive range of extra-curricular activities which include lunchtime and after school clubs in activities such as netball, hockey, football, swimming, rounders, athletics, tennis, ballet, fencing, dance, trampolining, yoga, cricket strength and conditioning, badminton, equestrian and judo.

There is also an extensive fixtures list after school and on Saturdays which gives most students a chance to represent their school, with many going on to compete at a county, regional and national level. We employ specialist coaches to support the school’s main sports netball, hockey, tennis and swimming.

We also offer sports tours, which sometimes take us overseas, and host a very special Sports Dinner each year, to celebrate the students' achievements.
