Drama has been a fundamental part of a young person’s learning experience since the time of Ancient Greece. It teaches us how to engage with the world and each other – enriching cultural awareness and developing personal sensitivity. It is also great fun! All students enjoy drama, as part of the curriculum in Years 7 to 9 and as an optional subject at GCSE, A-Level and IB.

Teaching and learning methods in drama are varied and exciting. Lessons use individual, pair and group work and there is a significant focus on student creativity and decision making. We use a mix of devised and scripted material. Throughout the school students acquire, develop and enrich their understanding of drama skills, principles, vocabulary and techniques.

Most lessons take place in the school’s Performing Arts Centre. There are opportunities to learn about lighting and technical skills both within and beyond the curriculum. We also have Redland Hall: a state-of-the-art performance space which is used for lessons and extra-curricular events and activities.

Enrichment and extra-curricular

We encourage students to take part in extra-curricular activities such as theatre trips, school productions, clubs and professionally led workshops. Recent years have seen us performing at the Shakespeare Schools Festival and the Edinburgh Fringe.

Many students take private Speech and Drama lessons provided by the school’s associated specialist teachers. They enjoy great success in their Trinity-Guildhall examinations and the annual Bristol Speech and Drama festival.
