World-class soprano sings at Redmaids' High ahead of the Royal Wedding!

We were delighted to welcome soprano Elin Manahan Thomas to school this week. The visit had an extra buzz with the announcement just a few days prior that she would be performing at the wedding service of Prince Harry and Ms. Meghan Markle, at St George's Chapel on 19 May.

Elin gave a singing masterclass to five students: Alice Pleat, Francesca Lee, Molly Whitworth, Jenny Griffith and Elysia Cains in front of an audience of staff and students. She repeatedly spoke of the importance of posture and focus when performing, “Stand with your feet solidly on the ground,” she reminded the students, “and fix your gaze on one thing in the audience.” Each of the girls also received individual coaching and feedback.

Later that evening, Elin presented prizes at the Music Dinner. Director of Music, Mrs Harrison opened the evening with a speech in which she described the enjoyment of being part of such a busy Music Department with, "Over 20 different ensembles rehearsing weekly, over 50 different performance occasions and a staggering 8,190 individual music lessons taking place over the course of the year." You can read her full 2018 Music Report here.

Describing Elin's visit, Mrs Harrison said, “We are extremely pleased that so many girls were able to meet and learn from Elin. Not only is she an exceptional musician and performer, she also exudes great warmth which the girls really responded to. We all very much look forward to seeing her perform at the Royal Wedding on Saturday 19 May.”

Elin studied as a choral scholar at Cambridge University before going on to postgraduate studies at the Royal College of Music.

As one of the most exceptional sopranos of her generation, she has performed at many of the world’s most prestigious venues and festivals, and with leading orchestras and conductors. She is perhaps most famously known for her performances of baroque masterpieces - such as her performance of Handel's Eternal Source of Light Divine at the opening of the London 2012 Paralympics.
