We love poetry!

Poet Malaika Kegode interviewed by school radio station

We had a week of celebration to mark National Poetry Day.

It began with poet Malaika Kegode performing two of her poems in our Monday morning assembly – you could have heard a pin drop! ‘Requite’ is her debut poetry collection. Malaika also ran masterclasses for students throughout the morning, and was on hand to perform again at our annual 'Poetry by Heart' competition. This sees girls in Year 10 learn and recite a poem. The winner was Tamsyn Rodliffe who will go on to represent the school in this national competition.

In a fitting end to a jam-packed day for Malaika, some of our Sixth Form students (pictured) interviewed her for our school radio station, Redmaidio, and a group of 15 of them enjoyed a trip to the Arnolfini later in the week. This evening event, called ‘Tongue Fu’, showcased some of the country's finest spoken word poets performing to improvised music, giving the Sixth Formers a fresh perspective of poetry.

On the day itself, Thursday 4 October, poems were being read, written and performed across the school site as both students and staff shared their favourites.

The week culminated in a fantastic assembly led by the whole of Year 7 who gave dramatic performances of four different poems that reflected this year's National Poetry Day theme of 'change': Child's Song in Spring by E. Nesbit, Nearly Four by Jeremy Lloyd, The Way through the Woods by Rudyard Kipling and Instructions for Not Becoming a Werewolf by Abigail Parry.
