This term, Year 8 decided to support the charity Toilet Twinning. This is a water and sanitation initiative that sets up safe and clean toilet facilities for people across the world. This is particularly important for young girls, who are left vulnerable to attack if they have to go in the open, during the night.
This was first brought to the attention of Year 8 when Labour MP Thangam Debbonaire came in to speak to us in the Autumn Term. She mentioned the charity and it struck a chord with the pupils who decided to start raising money.
In order to get the funds, Year 8 ran a chicken bingo stand, sold bags of sweets and Lucy Baker and Rosie Milne raised £150 doing a weekend car wash! In total the group raised over £400 which is enough to build one whole school toilet block and two household latrines. They will choose where the toilets will be built at the start of next term.
Across the globe children miss 443 million school days because of dirty water and poor sanitation. We are so proud of Year 8 for doing their bit to help change this.
