Students in fine voice at St George's

Students from Redmaids’ High School came together for their first joint music concert at St George's Bristol this week.

The two-hour performance included a touching tribute to Dame Vera Lynn in honour of her 100th birthday, by the school’s ‘Close Encounters’ a capella group singing White Cliffs of Dover.

The wide-ranging musical talents of the student body came to the fore in a rousing recital of Elgar’s Pomp and Circumstance March No 4 by a 45-strong Symphony Orchestra.

The school’s Youth Choir, made up of girls in Years 7 to 9, equally impressed with a tender choral rendition of Over the Rainbow in the style of the late Eva Cassidy.

The audience was also treated to the inaugural outing of the Redmaids’ High Community Choir made up of parents, old girls, staff and governors.

Mrs Stephanie Harrison, Director of Music, said: “It was such a wonderful evening and particularly exciting to combine the musical talents of girls from both schools. Seeing more than 300 people on stage was exhilarating for everyone.”

Mrs Isabel Tobias, Headmistress, said: “The breadth of fine musicianship was plain for all to see and will continue to be one of the many strengths of our new school.

“I’m pleased that such a large audience was able to witness the magic of these talented young women making music together.”
