Sixth Formers discuss politics with local MP

This week, our International Baccalaureate Diploma and A Level Politics students met local MP Darren Jones when he visited Redmaids’ High School to discuss his career and life in politics.

He began by describing his own background, growing up in a working class family in Lawrence Weston, with very little money and experiencing, “what poverty really feels like.”

“From a young age,” he explained, “I was focused on getting a really good education to help me secure a well-paid job. So I went to university before initially going into law. But I was always interested in politics.”

His political career to date has involved campaigning to remain in the European Union, working on Hilary Clinton’s election campaign in America the States and supporting Marvin Rees’ Bristol Mayoral campaign. He was elected as the Labour Party candidate for Bristol North West in 2017.

During the session, our students had the chance to quiz Darren on some topical issues. Their questions included, “What are your thoughts on the current Labour leadership?”, “What do you think about Prime Minister’s Question Time?”, “Does Jacob Rees-Mogg have serious ambitions to be the next Prime Minister?” and “Will Brexit go ahead?”

Darren was refreshingly honest in his feedback as he described how much time it takes as an MP to effect real change. “You really have to focus on key areas where you feel you can make a difference,” he explained. “In Bristol, for example, one of my biggest priorities is to provide more affordable housing.”

Clearly passionate about what he does, Darren urged the students to get involved in politics, reminding them that it impacts upon every area of life. Ultimately, he said, “It’s great to have a job that involves tackling injustice and giving a voice to those who may not feel they have one.”
