Free medical careers conference puts girls first

"Thank you for assuring me on my choice to become a doctor" and "The honesty of the doctors about the reality was really good" - just some of the comments from visiting students following this year's Women and Careers conference for Year 10 students.

The free event, open to state and independent schools across the region, was attended by doctors and medical practitioners from a wide range of disciplines who gave their time to speak to the girls about careers in Medicine.

The event, now in its 6th year, is organised and hosted by Redmaids’ High School, and was attended by schools from Bristol, Bath, Exeter, Cheltenham and Bruton.

North Bristol NHS Trust consultants Dr Ed Morris and Dr Karine Zander, both Consultant Anaesthetists, shared their collective medical experience in keynote addresses, and advised the girls on gaining a place at medical school.

More than 20 other speakers lead workshops exploring how the brain works, paramedicine, life as a junior doctor, DNA analysis, gene therapy, and nursing.

Workshops lead by urological and kidney transplant consultants also enabled the girls to test their keyhole surgery skills on life-like body simulators.

The conference was sponsored by Swansea University whose medical school offers a choice of degrees for would-be doctors and life scientists.

Mrs Tobias, Headmistress at Redmaids’ High, said: “We focus this conference towards the needs of girls as the gender imbalance against women, particularly in some very senior medical roles, remains a reality. As a girls-only school, we clearly see it as our mission to help address this.

“Being able to extend the opportunities presented through this conference to students from other schools is very important and we are grateful to all our speakers for giving us their time and to Swansea University for sponsoring the event.”
