Col gives top computer science advice

Year 9 Computer Science students rolled out the red carpet for a special guest – the founder and CEO of the popular movie database IMDb - Col Needham

Mr Needham’s visit linked in with work the group have been doing with Mr Kelly, Head of Computer Science, on database development.

As well as thrilling the girls with anecdotes about A-list stars of film and TV he has met, he described how as a movie-loving 14-year-old boy he first had the inspiration for creating a database that is now a blockbuster website in its own right.

With a main office in Bristol, and others in Seattle and Santa Monica, USA, IMDb employs 250 people with a good balance between male and female staff.

The site receives 250 million unique visitors every month and is one of the top 25 most used UK websites, a top 40 website in the US, and in the top 50 worldwide.

Completely down to earth, despite the celebrity-studded circles he moves in, Col stressed the importance of computer science in future technological advancement and is a major advocate for increasing the proportion of women working in the IT sector.

Last summer, more than half – 57% - of our GCSE results in ICT and computing were graded A*.

Mr Kelly said: “Col’s visit brought this subject completely to life, giving the students tangible and relevant insight into the value of computing and how it contributes to the progression of our STEM capability in the UK today.”

Finally, thank you to parent Mr Yabsley for introducing us to Col.
