Success in STEM

Our Science Department was delighted to receive an award from the National STEM Learning Centre, in recognition of their success in promoting STEM subjects.

This award reflects the extensive range of additional activities the department organises to stretch, challenge and stimulate the students. These include running specialist extra-curricular clubs in topics such as astronomy, imagineering and dissection, and entering national competitions such as the Biology and Chemistry Olympiads.

Some of the activities are accredited through the CREST Awards Scheme – the British Science Association’s flagship programme for young people and the only nationally recognised accreditation scheme for STEM project work.

During the last academic year alone, six students received Silver Crest Awards for their involvement in the Royal Horticultural Society’s Green Plan-it Challenge, four students received Silver Crest Awards with the Airbus Industrial Cadet Scheme and six students received Gold Crest Awards for their work with the Engineering Education Scheme.

The Science Department also runs regular trips to the Big Bang Science fair in Birmingham and CERN in Switzerland (one of the world's largest and most respected centres for scientific research). The team is also involved in the Hisparc Cosmic Ray Project with Bristol University and opened their own observatory with computerised optical telescope and weather station in 2014.

As Head of Science, Dr Zoe Bell (pictured centre) said, “It is wonderful to receive this recognition. We do provide extensive additional opportunities here, but feel extremely fortunate to have so many students who want to engage with them.”
