#WomenInSTEM Conference

On Friday 18 May, we hosted a major STEM conference.  Cyber security, structural engineering, crime scene detection, code breaking, machine learning and volcanoes were just some of the subjects covered in the 20 workshops on offer as part of the day.

The aim was to inspire the next generation of young women to consider careers in the STEM subjects – science, technology, engineering and maths.

Experts from academia and industry were keen to be involved with names like Dyson, Renishaw and Broadcom signing up to provide sessions.

Dr Emily Grossman, an expert in molecular biology and genetics delivered a keynote address on bucking stereotypes in STEM and following your passions. The day concluded with an exclusive performance of Ada Ada Ada, an interactive, wearable-technology show, which came to Redmaids’ High with support from the University of Bristol.

Following the event, one student tweeted @DrEmilyGrossman to say, “I really enjoyed your talk. It made me think about the difference between the stereotypical characteristics of a scientist and the characteristics of an actual scientist. Thank you so much for being so inspiring and making the day so memorable.”
