Spanish language and culture trip

Our Spanish linguists spent their half term in Spain

A group of Spanish linguists spent their half term in Spain, immersing themselves in the culture and improving their language skills.

The team of GCSE and A Level students had three mornings of intensive learning at a Spanish language school before being tasked with buying food in the famous  market in Malaga and conversing with local school students.

In an action-packed itinerary, the girls also visited the Picasso Museum, the Centre Pompidou, a Moroccan tea house, Malaga Cathedral, took part in a flamenco workshop and ate tapas in a traditional bar. There was also time for everyone to relax on the beach, enjoy the shops and have lunch in the marina area.

A highlight of the trip was a day spent at the Alhambra, a UNESCO world-heritage listed palace and fortress complex in Granada. Originally constructed as a small fortress in AD 889, it’s the most important surviving remnant of the period of Islamic rule in the Iberian Peninsula (711–1492).

Dr Escobar, Trip Leader and Head of Spanish at Redmaids’ High School said, “It is so important for anyone learning a new language to visit the country and speak to local people. I could see the girls’ confidence and conversational ability increase as the week went on.”
