Congratulations to Alumna Maya Coleborn who was awarded the national Art and Design Foundation Award, following an exhibition at the Oxo Tower in London.
Describing her work, entitled For summer is a-come unto day, Maya said, “I was inspired to create this work by the immense effort that people put into preparing for celebrations.
“These tree-like totum structures explore the ways that cultures traditionally celebrate; specifically focusing on English Folk festivities.
“I have never worked with rubber or inner tubes before, and the material provided lots of challenges which enabled me to really explore all of its qualities.
I came to realise that it responded well to traditional techniques used on fabrics, such as lace making or ruching, and I applied these to the rubber to create different textures.”
Maya’s art was originally nominated for this prestigious exhibition in London by her tutors at the Bristol School of Art, where she recently completed an art foundation year,. Naturally, she was delighted to go on to win the top prize!
We wish Maya continued success as she heads to St Anne's College to study Fine Art at The Ruskin College, Oxford.
