It’s been an action-packed autumn at our Junior School, with success coming in various areas.
A team of orienteerers became national schools champions in their age group, a Year 5/6 science team is through to the finals of the national Quiz Club UK in January, and two pupils earned separate recognition beyond school: Amaarah (Year 6) became the Bristol Post's Young Gold Star Hero for her work helping the homeless, and Isabel (Year 5) won an art competition promoting Bristol with National Express coaches.
The school have also been inspired by speakers from the fields of music, engineering and TV: world-acclaimed musician Nicola Benedetti gave a masterclass for budding junior violinists; Masters student Kate Mactear discussed future careers involving engineering; and Great British Bake Off semi-finalist Briony May used her experience to encourage them to aim high.
Headteacher Lisa Brown said: “We keep our pupils busy, never missing an opportunity to extend their learning and develop new interests.
“They receive the highest quality of learning thanks to our subject specialist teachers but we also provide excellent pastoral care which is woven into our daily practice, and each and every contact we have with the girls.”
Other autumn highlights included leading the public parade at the school’s annual Founders’ Commemoration Day, and taking part in after-dark astronomy workshops at the school’s very own telescope and observatory.
Next term, netball begins for Years 3 to 6, with numerous fixtures against local schools; Robotics club takes part in the First Lego League finals; Caving club begins on a Friday afternoon; and the girls develop important life skills in weekly ‘Bikeability’ training.
