Juniors speak up in Bristol equality project

A group of Year 6 pupils threw themselves into a special project marking the 2018 centenary of women’s suffrage and found their voices recorded for a unique art installation being premiered at Bristol’s Arnolfini in November.

They were taking part in an interactive workshop with the Breathing Fire Theatre Company who skilfully drew out the girls’ feelings about inequality through song, sound and movement.

The ‘We are Warriors’ project  - commissioned by Bristol Women's Voice for their Deeds Not Words programme - aims to mark 100 years since the first women were given the right to vote and to continue addressing inequality in today’s world.

Miss Browning, Head of Music in the Junior School, said: “The girls tapped into their own feelings to produce physical and musical expressions of their ideas. It was a really original way of conveying a story, particularly one that continues to be of such importance in all societies and cultures.”

The sound and light art work is being created by artist Helen Cole and In Between Time.
