The Redmaids’ High School’s radio station was set up in December 2016 and broadcast its first show in April 2017.
To date over 30 shows have been broadcast, with regular features including ‘Desert Island Desks’, the ‘Evie and Freya Show’, ‘Radio Rebel' and (soon to be launched) ‘Girls Hour’.
The purpose-built radio shack, as it is known, contains all the necessary recording equipment to allow the girls to make professional, high quality broadcasts – it is fully sound-proofed with acoustic panels, mixing desks and microphones so girls can experience being in a real studio. The shack was part-funded by a grant from the Barry Theo Jones Fund.
Next week, the school will welcome DJ Kate Harris from Radio Lollipop to school for a fundraising initiative devised entirely by the students, to support the Bristol Children’s Hospital. Staff, students and parents can pay £1 to choose a track or 50p for a ‘shout-out’. Please email redmaidio@redmaidhigh.co.uk to make a request.
As Mrs Bramley-Dymond, Head of IT at Redmaids’ High School said, “Redmaidio gives students the chance to use the spoken rather than the written word and to develop communication skills. We have been really impressed with the maturity and quality of the girls’ broadcasts … but we are always on the look-out for new features! So if you have a story to tell, please do get in touch.”
