Founders’ Commemoration Day 2019

Founders’ Commemoration Day 2019

Founders’ Commemoration Day is an annual event which sees the whole school of around 770 girls being led by the Head Girl through the City Centre to Bristol Cathedral. Here the students enjoy a special service which celebrates the school’s founders John Whitson, Reverends T G Rose, and Urijah Thomas.

For the 2019 Founders’ Commemoration Day, students wore green ribbons as they processed through Bristol to show support for action against climate change.

The school has introduced many energy-saving measures in recent years, and in 2017 it received a Bronze Eco-Schools Award.

More recently, a team of students has been working with other local schools, in a project led by the Bristol Education Partnership to develop ideas which further reduce our carbon footprint.

As Mrs Tobias explained, “This is an important day for us to remember our founders, who had the vision to create educational opportunities for girls.

“I am sure they would be delighted to know that we are still pioneers in education – this time by taking major steps to tackle the climate change crisis – and we hope this small symbolic gesture encourages others to take action too.”

In addition, this year had added poignancy as it was Mrs Tobias' 19th and last Founders' Commemoration Day as Headmistress of the school, a fact that did not go unnoticed by the very many parents and former students who came to watch the procession.
