Excellent GCSE grades

Redmaids pupils celebrate GCSE success in 2018

There was a fantastic atmosphere in school today as the students collected their GCSE results, with 46% of ALL grades at A* (or the equivalent 8 or 9), and over a quarter of all grades achieving the highest level 9.

Subjects including German, music, computer technology, and business studies and economics saw a full sweep of A*A or 7,8,9. Particularly noteworthy was music in which 100% received an 8 or 9 which is an A* equivalent and 82% received the very highest grade of 9.

But while their exams may have been over in June, these girls have not been wasting the summer waiting for results. They have been volunteering, performing, taking part in sport and learning new skills.

Collecting their grades today were some GB athletes – cricketer Maddie H, synchronised swimmer Kate and fencing superstar Jade who have all had a busy summer training and playing. Just last week Maddie H, who got 10 A* grades and 1 A (or equivalent), took part in two winning matches for Gloucestershire against Wales.

“I’m ecstatic! I can’t believe it,” said Maddie H. “I’m honestly over the moon! Cricket has been keeping me busy this summer and taking my mind off the results, but I’m just so happy with how I’ve done.”

Furthermore, a group of Redmaids’ High students have only just returned from the Edinburgh Fringe Festival where they were performing their own spin of the Grimm Tales.

Another group, including Maddie B who today picked up all A*A grades (or equivalent), took part in the National Citizenship Scheme this summer, a voluntary personal and social development programme for 15–17 year olds.

And two other students, Kitty and Nahila, who both got 100% A*A (or equivalent) have spent the summer learning a new skill to bring to their classmates. Having been inspired by the school’s fundraising on World Down Syndrome day last March, they wanted to learn Makaton – the method of using signs and symbols to communicate without speech - and will be running a lunchtime club next year helping teach other girls how to sign.

Isabel Tobias, Headmistress of Redmaids’ High said, “The results we’ve seen here today show that hard work from both students and staff, really does reap the rewards. But I am also delighted that our girls display skills and talents that extend far beyond the league tables.

“We aim to develop the whole girl and instil a sense of purpose and ambition, and the activities our students have undertaken this summer really show that they have taken this to heart.”
