Drama at Redmaids’ High is thriving

Annie (pictured) and Lucy share the Miss Nasmyth Memorial Award for Best Senior Performance

Drama at Redmaids’ High is thriving with record numbers of students competing at local drama festivals and opting to take professional exams.

Girls from Year 3 to 13 enjoyed great success at the Bristol Eisteddfod of Speech and Drama, held during the Easter break. This annual event attracts competitors from across Bristol so the standard of performance is always exceptionally high. The girls work hard throughout the year and were entered in to several different categories including poetry, prose, mime, improvisation and acting.

Many of our girls won their classes. In fact, Annie (pictured) and Lucy share the Miss Nasmyth Memorial Award for Best Senior Performance having both each received two ‘Outstanding’ awards –the highest possible accolade. Annie for both her Prose and Shakespeare classes and Lucy for both her Dickens and Poetry classes. Together, they also won the Duologue class.

The Junior School’s group performance of Hamlet was also judged to be ‘Outstanding’ and won the ‘Best Overall group’ trophy, and Jenna and Aggie were invited to perform at the Prize Winners’ Concert.

Last term saw over 100 girls who study Speech & Drama within the school take their Trinity Guildhall Acting & Speaking exams, as well as a number who sat London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts (LAMDA) and London College of Music Examinations in Musical Theatre. Our track record here is exceptional - highlighted this year by the fact that all twelve girls who recently passed their Grade 8 Drama Exams, did so with Distinction.

As Senior School Head of Drama, Ms McCormack explains, “The girls here are always keen to perform, so we provide plenty of opportunity for them to do so. This helps to develop their self-confidence, which is then reflected in the tremendous results they achieve in public examinations and beyond.”
